Researching: CZECHOWICZ, MATIJAS, MATIAS
My grandfather, his brother, and their parents left Czechoslovakia somewhere between 1885-1890 and settled in central Texas. My father said that when his parents landed in America their name was changed. It had been Czechowicz or something similar and was changed to Matijas. In later years, the "J" was dropped to leave us the present name of Matias. My great grandfather, Louis Stephen, was born in Prague to Josef Czechowicz? and Mary Zabransky. Louis was born on April 27, 1885 and his brother Anton was born in 1881. Is there any way I would be able to check records? Or whom would I even contact to see if there is any information on these ancestors? I have tried to check passenger lists on incoming ships and fave found no information. Any ideas? Thanks so much for any suggestions you might be able to provide.

Researching: KUBAN, LACHMAN, MARTINCOVA, CABAK, OBLOUK
I live in Ferris, Texas, near Dallas. I am interested in information on forefathers who emigrated from Moravia to Texas USA in November 1894. They emigrated from Velke Karlovice in the valley Pod Tatem in Moravia at that time. The family left Velke Karlovice, took a train to Bremen, Germany, and the a steamship to the USA. According to some family documentation, the last address they had in Velke Karlovice was Podtata no. 213. The name of the people who emigrated was Paul and Marie Kuban. They had eight children when they left Velke Karlovice - Marie, Jozef, Cilka, Frantisek, Pavel, Aneska, Karl, and Anna. At the time of their leaving, Karl and Anna were three week old twins. Earlier, in about 1880 or so, they had a daughter named Anicka, who died at age 6 months. Paul Kuban. Born in 1852, in Velke Karlovice, the second of three children to Martin Kuban and Anna Kuban. The oldest child was a boy Matus, and the youngest a girl named Veronika. Anna's maiden name was Lachman. The info I have is that he was born in No. 98, which I believe is an address in Velke Karlovice. They had a large farm in the area. Paul married once before, in about 1874, to a woman named Anicka Martincova. Anicka died three years later during childbirth. Paul died in April, 1923, in Fort Worth, Texas. Marie Kuban. Born in Horni Becva in 1860. Parents were Frantisek Cabak, and wife Anna nee Oblouk. Frantisek and Anna had a small farm, but he was mainly a skilled carpenter. They had four children, Marie, Frantisek, Josef, and Michal. They lived for a time in a place called Na Hluboke. Paul and Marie married in June 1877. As a reader may note, I'm very luckily, as I have a lot of information about Paul and Marie Kuban from the 1800s. This information was provided in a family history document written by one of their children, Josef, in about 1935. A cousin of mine, Robert Hopkins, had this document translated into English, and it has been an incredible source of family history information. Personally, Paul and Marie were my great grandparents. Their fifth born, Frantisek, was may grandfather. He was born in Velke Karlovice in 1887, and died in Ft. Worth Texas, in 1954. He had two children, Joseph Kuban, my father (1913 - 1994), and Martha Kuban (1916 - ). If anyone can provide me any information about any of the Kubans listed above, or any of the places, I'd greatly appreciate.

We are researching our family of which we can find only small bits and pieces, and hope you can help us. On the 1910 census for Pocahontas Virginia, there is Anna Mancos, born about 1879 in Slovakia, became citizen in 1883, so we believe her parents (Vodilka) came to America between 1879-1883. She was a 31 year old widow in 1910 and had three children listed: Andrew, age 9; Steve, age 7; and Mary, age 10. These had half-brothers and sister: Mike, Joe, John, and Genevieve, born 1892 (who was a nun in Alabama for over 70 years) Anna's husband was Joseph Mancos, born in Czecho-Slovakia and we believe is listed on the Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island.
