Slovakia's Mountain Treasures

Hi Everyone!

We will have a Slovak exhibit at the Czech & Slovak National Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It's titled "Slovakia's Mountain Treasures: Shepherds and Their Art". The exhibit will open on Fri. evening Jan. 30th from 5 - 7 p.m. and you are all invited - know it's likely very far for most of you but if you have friends and family nearby do tell them about it. The exhibit will run through March 29th.

On display will be the gorgeous decorated sheepskin coats, felted shepherd's coats and decorative shepherd's pins that the shepherds wore as well as the things they made - the c~rpaky, (carved shepherd's cups); carved cheese and butter molds, incised horn items - all attesting to the high level of artistic talents that the villagers in Slovakia possessed. All the items on display are from our Baine/Cincebeaux Collection of Slovak Folk Dress and Folk Art.

The exhibit will tell about sheepherding, one of the dominant occupations in Slovakia in centuries past. It took place in eastern, central and western Slovakia. There are a number of salas~y (places where they keep sheep and make sheep cheese) to this day.

The exhibit will open on Friday night January 30th and on Sat., Jan. 31 my mother and I will lead a group through the exhibit giving more information and answering questions. These guided tours will take place at 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. and 2 - 3 p.m. Also be glad to answer questions about Slovakia - folk culture, genealogy, etc.

Guided tours of the exhibit have been scheduled for Sat., Jan. 31 in the morning at 10:30 a.m. and Sat. afternoon at 2:30 p.m.- collectors Helene Cincebeaux and Helen Baine will be on hand to tell stories about the treasures on display on a walk through the exhibit. Sunday, Feb. 1. is the armchair travelogue, a slide presentation titled "Treasures of Slovakia", by Helene and Helen which begins at 2:00 p.m.

Sure would love to have anyone come who can make it and would be glad to answer questions - e mail me direct helenezx@aol.com
